Welcome to Unit One!
First marking period, students will read a variety works by female African-American writers. They will read the
works of Hansberry, Morrison, Hurston, Walker, and Angelou. They will compare roles of women within American culture and
African-American culture within various time periods. Students will examine the contributions and changes that have come about
through literature. Through classroom discussion, literature circles and Socratic seminars, students will develop a deep understanding
of the importance of African American female writers in our history and how they helped mold our world. They will examine and
analyze their struggles compare to the struggles of other women in society and the struggles of African American men. Once students
have examined the roles of women in a variety of settings, they will write an analytical piece.
